Description Chosei Miwa Real name: Nobuo Miwa Born April 30, 1901, in Yoita-machi, Mishima-gun, Niigata Prefecture (present-day Nagaoka City), he was a Japanese-style painter. Member of the Japan Art Academy. Recipient of the Kyoto Prefecture Arts and Crafts Merit Award, the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award, and honorary citizen of Yoita-machi (present-day Nagaoka City). Brother-in-law of Insho Domoto. He moved to Kyoto in his childhood and entered the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1913. In 1924, he graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Painting Specialized School (present-day Kyoto City University of Arts). He studied under Insho Domoto and used the art name "Chosei." He was first selected for the Teiten Exhibition in 1927. He received the Tokusen (Special Selection) award for "Haruoka" in 1931 and "Fune Tsukuru Kyu" in 1934. He participated in the "Toka-sha" art school founded by Insho and later served as the head of the school. After Insho's death in 1975, he presided over the Toka-sha. He received the Japan Art Academy Award for "Shuchu" in 1962. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1979. He had a wide range of works, including landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures, and in his later years, he was known for his vividly colored landscape paintings and decorative flower and bird paintings.
