This is maple burl and Yakusugi cedar. The maple burl has very beautiful burl and curly figure, and is highly recommended for making rulers, etc. The surface is also coated with urethane, so if you don't like urethane coating, please remove it with a hand plane. The Yakusugi cedar is scrap wood from a piece with sasa-moku (bamboo grain). The largest, blackish Yakusugi cedar has a lot of oil content. I think you can get a very good grain by polishing it with sandpaper, etc.
