It is said to have originated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, when the Kingdom of Prussia, which was fighting against the French Empire, introduced it. While the US military dog tags come in a set of two, the Italian military dog tag is a single stainless steel plate. The original purpose was to stamp the same content on both the top and bottom of a single plate, and in the event of death on the battlefield, one half was collected for the death report, and the other half was left for identifying the body. For that reason, there is a hole in the bottom half for the chain to pass through.
