Rembrandt is a representative painter of 17th-century Netherlands. He is known for leaving behind many portraits, including self-portraits, and his numerous paintings and prints based on biblical themes are also widely popular. The 17th century, when Rembrandt was active, was a time when naturalistic subjects such as landscapes, genre paintings, and still lifes flourished like never before in the Netherlands. The genre paintings and landscapes of painters like Vermeer and Jacob van Ruisdael were works of the same era as Rembrandt. While Rembrandt frequently depicted scenes from his surroundings in his sketches and prints, he did not produce landscape or genre paintings. The fields that Rembrandt pursued as a lifelong challenge, aside from portraits, were narrative paintings, works with themes derived from the Bible and mythology. Why did Rembrandt aspire to be a narrative painter? And why did other painters become landscape painters and genre painters? This exhibition attempts to shed new light on Rembrandt and 17th-century Dutch painting by exploring the connections between Rembrandt, who chose the path of a narrative painter and achieved fame in an era when narrative painting was not necessarily widely supported, and his time. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin are known worldwide as treasure troves of 17th-century Dutch paintings, including Rembrandt.
