In the early 16th century Ottoman Empire, Suleiman, the son of the 9th Emperor Selim I, meets a young woman in a town he secretly visits with his close friend Ibrahim. The girl, Alexandra, had been kidnapped from a village in another country and sold as a slave. Upon hearing the news of the emperor's death, Suleiman becomes the 10th Emperor of the Ottoman Empire. Suleiman welcomes Alexandra into the emperor's harem, and is drawn to her not only for her beauty but also for her intelligence, giving her the new name Hürrem.
