A monumental masterpiece by the giant of jazz tenor saxophone, Sonny Rollins. This is one of the greatest modern jazz albums, and I've listened to it countless times, to the point of memorizing the phrases, yet it's always filled with fresh appeal. The swinging feel and well-sung improvisations created by Rollins' commanding tenor saxophone are further enhanced by the rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan (p), Doug Watkins (b), and Max Roach (ds), who are known for their work on many classic albums. This is a wonderful album that remains a landmark in jazz history as a Sonny Rollins one-horn quartet. US Prestige LP 7079 STEREO The original was released in 1957, but this record appears to be a reissue from around 1964. The jacket shows signs of aging, with scuffs, yellowing, and wear. The record has fine scratches overall, with some minor surface noise and occasional light pops and clicks. I think it's at a level that won't bother most people, but please refrain from purchasing if you are sensitive to such things. Although it says STEREO, the sound is close to mono, and while there is no stamp, the thick sound is definitely by Van Gelder. The pressing from this period has a higher sound pressure and more powerful sound quality than later reissues.
