I am selling this item because the wrist size doesn't fit, which is a shame, even though I purchased it from a very reliable shop. I would like to pass it on to someone who appreciates antiques and will cherish it. This is a Victorian English antique Etruscan Revival bangle from 1897, featuring pearls. A certificate of authenticity is included. This beautiful bangle features seven pearls set in flowing stone settings and is designed with twisted wire and granulation, characteristic of the Etruscan Revival style. The Etruscan Revival design was inspired by the goldwork of the ancient Etruscan civilization. The ancient Etruscan civilization existed in central Italy from the 8th century BC to the 1st century BC and was known for its advanced architecture and goldwork. From the 18th to the 19th centuries, excavations of the ancient Etruscan civilization progressed, and Europeans at the time were amazed by the skillful techniques of the ancient people. The Etruscan Revival (reproduction) design was created from these techniques. (It was reproduced by the Italian jeweler Castellani and later became popular throughout Europe.) Etruscan Revival bangles often feature designs with the surface decorated with fine twisted wire and granulation, but this bangle has a striking design with thicker twisted wire. The stone settings and the S-shaped twisted wire running beneath them create a beautiful cross motif in the center. The effective use of curves in the asymmetrical design also suggests the influence of Art Nouveau, which was popular at the time. Unfortunately, one piece of granulation is missing. (It's one of the granules on the upper left side, arranged horizontally.) Also, there is some discoloration around the pearl settings. This is likely because the area around the settings was not cleaned during later cleaning to avoid damaging the pearls. I hope you can appreciate this as part of the charm of antique jewelry that has survived for 128 years.
