Afterword Kisa Tanimura As one of the commemorative events for Mr. Hosui's 77th birthday, the publication of this "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Notebook" was planned, but it was difficult to obtain permission. After a year of persistent requests, we finally received approval on the conditions that "widespread promotion and large-scale distribution are discouraged, and distribution should be limited to those affiliated with Shokai Publishing," and that "the lost parts (eleven poems) will not be supplemented because they are works from his younger days." As Mr. Norio Minami mentions in his notes, this "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Notebook" was buried in a drum can in a dugout to avoid damage from air raids, and as a result, it was soaked in contaminated water, causing eleven poems to be damaged and peeled off. Although it is titled "Hyakunin Isshu," the content of eighty-nine poems does not match the title, so we struggled with how to supplement the missing eleven poems. However, we decided to reproduce them from the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Shikishi Notebook" written by Masatomi Saka, which Mr. Hosui used as a reference when writing. Please understand that we had no choice but to do this since Mr. Hosui said, "I cannot supplement the poems." This "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Notebook" is a truly magnificent work, despite Mr. Hosui's humble words, "I am not a specialist in kana." Not a single poem has the same scattering, and moreover, there is no scattering that looks unnatural. The exquisite use of the characters goes without saying, but just by looking at the ingenuity of this arrangement, I believe one can see the extraordinary preparation Mr. Hosui put into writing this book. That is all.
