Honen was his bo-go (priestly name), his imina (personal name) was Genku, his childhood name was Seishimaru, and he was also known as Kurodani Shonin and Yoshimizu Shonin. He died on January 25, 1212 (Kenryaku 2), at Otani Zenbo. He was 80 years old (78 years old by the traditional Japanese system). On January 23, just before his death, he wrote the testament "One-Sheet Pledge" at the request of his disciple Genchi. His mausoleum was built next to Otani Zenbo (present-day Chion-in Honen Shonin Gobyō). ◆The Genchi lineage text, considered the final version, is as follows◆ "It is not the contemplation of the various wise men of Tang China and our country. Nor is it the Nembutsu recited by studying and understanding the meaning of the Nembutsu. For the sake of rebirth in the Pure Land, simply say Namu Amida Butsu, and believe without doubt that you will be reborn, and there is nothing else to consider. However, the three minds and four practices are all determined and contained within the belief that you will be reborn through Namu Amida Butsu. If you think of anything deeper than this, you will be separated from the compassion of the two Buddhas and will not be included in the original vow. Those who believe in the Nembutsu, even if they study the teachings of a lifetime, should consider themselves ignorant, like the unlearned nuns and laymen, and without acting like wise men, should simply recite the Nembutsu. As proof, I make the hand seals. The Anjin Gyō of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land sect) is perfected in this one sheet.
