Inspired by the words of an old teacher who preaches patriotism instead of attending classes, the students eagerly volunteer for the army, leaving the classroom singing the patriotic song "Watch on the Rhine." Paul (Lew Ayres), the class leader, is assigned to the same internal unit as his classmates Franz, Muller, Albert, and Behm. Sergeant Himmelstoss, who was called up from the reserves, is in charge of training the new recruits. Himmelstoss, who is usually a kind postal worker and familiar with Paul and the others, changes his attitude when he appears in a military uniform on the training ground, and subjects Paul and the new recruits to merciless, intense training.
