This is a calligraphy set stored in a letter box (fubako) made in the style of cherry bark craft (kabazaiku), a traditional craft of Akita Prefecture. It is made using the bark of wild cherry trees, and features a unique luster and a subdued color. The wooden surface is decorated with a pattern of clematis flowers and leaves, with mother-of-pearl inlay (raden zaiku) in the center of the flowers. Part of the flower pattern is worn. Inside, a complete set of calligraphy tools such as brushes, inkstones (suzuri), and paperweights (bunchin) are stored. The tool box is durable and can be used for a long time.
