Size: Overall: 199.5 x 56 cm Main paper: 118 x 43.5 cm This work features symmetrical scenes of spring and autumn landscapes with Tang dynasty figures, painted with remarkably vibrant pigments that have endured to the present day. The exquisite, detailed depictions of plants and the clothing of the figures, rendered with gold paint, are meticulously executed, leaving one in awe of Tosa Mitsuoki's outstanding artistic skill. This is a truly magnificent pair of hanging scrolls. As you can see, the aoi (hollyhock) crest, the fixed emblem of the Tokugawa family, is scattered in gold brocade embroidery from the inner border of the mounting to the pillars. It is presumed to have been a hanging scroll formerly owned by the later Tokugawa Marquis family. The seal reads "Tosa Sakon Shogen Mitsuoki in." This work was created after he was appointed Sakon Shogen in the third year of Jo'o (1654). It is housed in a signed box by Imperial Household Artist [Kinsui Mori] (1843-1921).
