This is a fukuro obi (formal obi) I received from a relative. It is a "Muromachi Gen" brand obi by Kondaya Genbei (see page 3), from the Hachihime-i series (see page 4). Kondaya Genbei is a long-established obi shop in Kyoto's Muromachi district, with a history of over 280 years. The Hachihime-i series is a popular series known to those in the know. It has been stored for a long time and has some fold creases, but it is a beautiful item with almost no signs of wear from being tied. The gold background features a six-panel design of the Shosoin-style Hosoge flower pattern (housouge-mon) and arabesque pattern (karakusa-mon). The Hosoge flower pattern is a design of an imaginary flower that blooms in the Pure Land, and is one of the most prestigious floral patterns. The arabesque pattern is a design of vines that extend in all directions without interruption, and is loved as an auspicious pattern symbolizing "longevity" and "prosperity of descendants." This obi has a design composition that is very suitable for auspicious occasions, with the noble "Hosoge" scattered within the "arabesque" pattern, which wishes for prosperity. It is also a high-quality item with Pearl Tone processing. I believe it is a gorgeous formal obi suitable for formal wear such as visiting kimonos and solid-colored kimonos.
