Description Banshū Ueda (August 15, 1869 – December 15, 1952) was a Japanese painter who was active from the Meiji to the Showa periods. His real name was Minotaro, and he also went by the art name Ryugai. Born in Kyoto Prefecture, he graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Painting School and studied under Keinen Imao, learning flower-and-bird painting. Major Awards: 1900 (Meiji 33): Received the third prize at the 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Kyoto Art Association. 1903 (Meiji 36): Received the third prize at the National Industrial Exhibition. 1904 (Meiji 37): "Flower and Bird" received a silver prize at the St. Louis World's Fair. 1905 (Meiji 38): Received a gold medal at the Liège Exposition in Belgium. Activities in Official Exhibitions: 1907 (Meiji 40): Selected for the 1st Bunten Exhibition with "Winter Day." 1908 (Meiji 41): "Kantei" received the third prize at the 2nd Bunten Exhibition. 1910 (Meiji 43): "Otsukayama no Kei" received an honorable mention at the 4th Bunten Exhibition. 1915 (Taisho 4): "Kofuseigetsu-zu" received the third prize at the 9th Bunten Exhibition. In 1919 (Taisho 8), he participated in the formation of the Japan Free Painting Association and was active as a member. After that, he continued to exhibit at the Shin-Bunten Exhibition and was known for his gentle painting style, mainly focusing on flower-and-bird paintings. He passed away on December 15, 1952, at the age of 83.
