Pattern/Design...Other Hoteichiku and Kikko Bamboo Specialist, Takeho Workshop, this is Takeshita, representing Hiroshima. These are bamboo walking stick crafts made in my workshop over about a year, using natural Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo. The rare Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo are characterized by Madake bamboo that has mutated, resulting in shorter nodes than usual. Hoteichiku (literally "cloth bag bamboo") got its name because it resembles the bulging belly of Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Kikko bamboo (literally "tortoise shell bamboo") got its name because it resembles the pattern of a tortoise shell. These are auspicious Hoteichiku items. The process involves harvesting natural Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo, followed by cleaning (removing dirt) and natural drying for about 2 months. After that, the surface is lightly burned to remove some of the oil, and then wiped. After the burned bamboo cools, it is polished with rice bran regularly for about a year. During this time, the moisture naturally disappears, making it considerably lighter than at the beginning. The burning process creates a unique pattern. All the patterns are similar. The patterns are original to our workshop. The walking sticks do not have rubber tips at the bottom, so customers can attach them if they wish. The length is approximately 95cm for the shorter walking sticks. The longer walking sticks are 102cm. They are sold as a set of two. We have dozens more, so please feel free to contact me if you are interested. The selling price at our workshop is 14,000 yen to 18,000 yen per stick, but we are selling these as a clearance item.
