By Yamaguchi Kigyō Preface by Okayoshi Tane and Ochiai Naosumi Reviewed by Sanjō Nishi Suetomo Illustrated by Kawabe Mitate Published in Meiji 10 (1877) Kawabe Mitate was a Yamato-e painter of the late Edo and Meiji periods, and a retainer of the Yanagawa clan. He studied under Maki Izumi. He associated with shishi (men of high purpose) such as Hirano Kuniomi, Takasugi Shinsaku, and Ōmura Masujirō. The name "Mitate" was also given to him by Sanjō Sanetomi, based on a poem. After the Meiji Restoration, he served as a Gon-negi (assistant priest) at Ise Grand Shrine, was commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was a director of the Japan Art Association.
