This is a wooden ritual statue from the Congo region of Africa. The general term for spirit figures made in this region is Nkisi, which can be classified into four types: "Nkonde, Npezo, Na Monganga, and Mbula." This item, with nails hammered all over its body, corresponds to Nkisi Nkonde. The nails hammered into the Nkonde statue are driven in by the shaman during rituals. In other words, it can be said that curses (spells) have been cast as many times as there are nails. However, contrary to its eerie appearance, the curses performed with Nkonde were mainly used for the purpose of protecting the community, such as "communication with ancestral spirits, punishment of criminals, and prayers for the safety of crops and the community" (of course, there are also examples of it being used to literally curse others, or to counter curses). Nkonde comes in a wide variety of designs, and the fact that no two are exactly alike is also one of its charms. This Nkonde has a more deformed face than those that are widely distributed, and has a rather gentle appearance. By the way, feathers, animal bones, and wrapped ropes are said to be added to enhance the magical power. By contemplating the purpose and background for which Nkonde was created, it becomes an interior item that is a cut above a simple object.
