In my experience, to remove the blackening, I soaked them in unsweetened milk (available at supermarkets) for a while and gently rubbed the surface with a soft cloth. As the milk turns gray, the silverware regains its silver shine. The blackening will progress again if left for a while, so it seems best to wrap each piece tightly with plastic wrap to prevent them from being exposed to air.
