In 1982, the checkerboard pattern gained worldwide attention when worn by Sean Penn in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," marking a turning point for VANS. This attention-grabbing event led to the "checkerboard pattern" becoming one of VANS' iconic designs. With its simple laceless design and ease of putting on and taking off, this classic VANS model is loved not only by skaters but also by surfers. --- [VANS] In 1966, Paul Van Doren and three partners opened their first shop on March 16th at 704E Broadway in Anaheim, California. In the 1970s, with superstars like Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, a skateboarding boom swept across the United States. The waffle sole offered excellent grip, and the shoes were durable and customizable, which began to catch on with West Coast skateboarders and BMX riders. VANS also supported the skateboarding team "Z-BOYS" as a sponsor. The West Coast local brand quickly became a major brand. VANS continues to evolve into a global brand to this day.
