Villa-Lobos is one of Brazil's leading composers of the 20th century. He himself played the guitar, so he wrote works that made the most of the guitar's sound and characteristics. "12 Etudes" is a representative work by Villa-Lobos for guitar. Not only does it improve the right and left hand techniques in performance, but it also has a high degree of musical completeness as a guitar piece, and it is a very useful etude for studying musical expression. However, in the published scores, there are some questionable points that seem to have arisen from misprints from the first draft, and also, because the notation of harmonics and repeats is not unified, there are parts that are interpreted and performed differently by different performers. Now that Villa-Lobos is gone, it is impossible to clarify all the unclear points, and it is honestly difficult to provide the best fingering, but we have investigated and corrected the parts where there are errors in the notation as much as possible, and we have aimed for left-hand fingering that is as natural as possible and easy to play even for intermediate guitarists. In addition, we have made some improvements for clarity, as follows: ● To avoid frequent use of sharps, flats, and naturals, we have avoided using accidentals as "just in case" as much as possible. In such cases, where accidentals are exceptionally necessary, they are enclosed in parentheses. ● Notation of harmonics The original harmonic notation varied depending on the score, but for clarity, the harmonic parts are indicated by ◆, and the string (circled number) and fret position are clearly indicated, and the fingering that seems appropriate has also been added. ● Addition of Japanese translations of expression marks, etc. Japanese translations have been added to the expression marks and terms that indicate the playing style, which are written to convey the image and playing style of the piece to the performer. ● Layout with reduced page numbers We have used "repeat signs" to create a layout that reduces the number of pages. ● Notes have been added to the notes where interpretations differ.
