I repurposed a kimono to make a hanten (a type of Japanese padded coat). The lining is cotton-padded quilting, making it very warm. The collar overlaps like a kimono, preserving the traditional Japanese aesthetic. I made it with women in mind, but it's also suitable for men. If hand washing, wash quickly by pressing, lightly spin dry, and iron while slightly damp with a pressing cloth. Some shrinkage may occur.
