The black lacquered surface features a design of camellias (tsubaki) in gold maki-e and vibrant colored lacquer. Some of the petals are inlaid with mother-of-pearl (raden) work, which shimmers with iridescent colors depending on the light. This is a very delicate and carefully crafted item, a valuable traditional craft.
