This is a handmade live bait rig, also known as "Nomaseri" or "Elevator Rig". Unlike standard live bait rigs, this one uses a treble hook for the main hook and a single hook for the secondary hook. Therefore, it is more suitable for hooking the tail, anus, or back rather than the mouth or nose. This has the advantage of allowing the baitfish to swim naturally without weakening easily. The rig is designed to be slightly longer overall, prioritizing bites and ensuring the baitfish doesn't weaken. We recommend trying this not only when fish are actively feeding but especially when they are finicky. The main hook is tied with a Palomar knot, and the secondary hook is tied with an external knot with ears, chosen for its strength and the fact that the hook tends to point slightly inward, making it easier for the fish to inhale. Additionally, the distance between the main hook and the secondary hook is set at approximately 15 cm. Please note that there may be slight variations as this is handmade. Commercial rigs have a shorter distance, but this wider spacing allows for baiting larger fish. If the spacing is too narrow, the secondary hook can pierce vital areas of the baitfish, weakening it, and if it's too short, the secondary hook loses its purpose. The main and secondary hooks are fixed, not sliding, which reduces the chance of losing fish during the fight as they won't shift during the hookset. The photos show flatfish caught with a bottom fishing setup and yellowtail caught with a float fishing setup. We use Yozuri snap swivels (breaking strength: 12kg) and tie the line with a Palomar knot. The main hook is a #4 treble hook with a soft glow bead attached to prevent the baitfish from being damaged and to attract prey. The secondary hook is a 16-go Maruseigo hook, and the leader is approximately 1.1m of pink fluorocarbon line (flexible fluoro) in size 8, which is said to be invisible to fish. When baiting, for fish like horse mackerel, mackerel, round sardinella, or sprat, the main hook can be placed on the nose, mouth, or back, and the secondary hook on the tail or back. For smaller fish like anchovies or small horse mackerel, the secondary hook can be used freely depending on the size.
