Kokeshi dolls have round heads and cylindrical bodies. It is said that they originated as souvenirs in hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region around the end of the Edo period. They are celebratory dolls that wish for the health and growth of children, and also have the auspicious meaning of "child-bearing" (ko-keshi).
