Oshi-dori Karakusa Mon Nishiki (Excerpt from the internet) The original Nishiki fabric was a weft brocade used as decoration at the tip of a large banner. It features a design of undulating arabesque circles, each containing two mandarin ducks facing each other, holding flower stems on lotus pedestals. Red is used for the ground, and green, indigo, yellow, white, and red are used for the arabesques, with indigo outlining the contours. The mandarin ducks have green, white, indigo, and yellow heads; green, white, indigo, and purple chests; green, white, indigo, purple, and yellow tail feathers; and a light green belly, making it a colorful and gorgeous brocade. The excellent design composition, beautiful color scheme, and exquisite weaving technique make it an outstanding work among the many Nishiki fabrics in the Shosoin Treasure Repository. It is woven by changing the weaving method to a warp brocade, while maintaining the splendor of the original.
