This is an Amehata Shinkiseki inkstone that has been tuned by Minista (remodeling the ink well and ink surface to improve the inkstone's performance). "Amehata Shinkiseki" is carved on the back of the inkstone. This inkstone was made by Chiseki Mochizuki, the head of Amehata Suzuri, using Amehata Shinkiseki from Yamanashi Prefecture. A bookmark from the Amehata Suzuri head family is included. This is a thin inkstone, suitable for kana (Japanese syllabary), sutra copying, and sumi-e (ink wash painting). It is lightweight, so it is also good for carrying around. There is a whitish area on the underside of the ink well, which turns slightly blue when wet. This is the first time I've seen this stone pattern, but it's quite beautiful and good. The ink grinds smoothly and comfortably, just like a traditional Japanese inkstone. It works well with both pine soot ink and oil soot ink, producing excellent ink color. The ink grinds very well and produces a rich ink. It creates a gradation from dark to light ink, and the ink spreads well, allowing you to write long, excellent lines. It's a "The Japanese Inkstone" type of inkstone that suits Japanese ink.
