Each volume includes a beautiful lithograph depicting the impression of Denmark by the master of Japanese painting, Kaii Higashiyama, as the frontispiece. The unsettling cover illustrations, typical of Andersen's fairy tales, are by the German illustrator Gerhard Oberländer, known for his picture book "The Little People of Cologne" (reminiscent of Daisuke Igarashi?). The different color schemes of each volume are believed to be by the book designer Shinji Tsuruoka.
