It is an inkstone with "Benkei stone" carved on the back, made by Soma Yodo. The Benkei stone inkstone uses red stone from Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Although stone quarrying and inkstone making have already ceased, it is a beautiful pink stone. The color of the stone is closest to photos 1-3 (a little more reddish). It appears whitish in photo 4. It appears blackish in photo 6. The ink grinds smoothly. I think the ink will turn black quickly. It is a good inkstone for both oil soot ink and pine soot ink. It is suitable for kana (Japanese syllabary, ~ half-cut paper), kanji (Chinese characters, ~ half-page), and ink painting.
