This set includes a three-hole, D-E-F scale shakuhachi with red urushi lacquer and tenchi maki (decorative binding), and a six-hole, Honshirabe (standard tuning) shakuhachi made from smoked bamboo. The three-hole shakuhachi is entirely lacquered with urushi. The six-hole shakuhachi has urushi lacquer only on the inside of the bore; the outside is not lacquered. Since it is made from smoked bamboo, a slight smoky smell remains. The maker's name is Mikoto. The utaguchi (blowing edge) and finger holes have all been adjusted by hand. Using knives and files, I carefully crafted them, adjusting the size and shape of the holes. This shakuhachi produces a clear sound with a light breath and is easy to play with a good, open tone.
