Mano-yaki Agawa Kiln is one of the kiln owners that inherits the traditional ceramic style "Mano-yaki" that is passed down in the Mano area of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. This pottery, nurtured by the rich nature and history of Sado Island, is characterized by its simple and warm texture, and is widely produced from everyday tableware to tea ceremony utensils. Agawa Kiln was built by Mr. Agawa Tamura, a ceramic artist who follows the lineage of Sasaki Shodo, the founder of Mano-yaki and a Living National Treasure. He established his own unique style, utilizing the soil and glaze of Sado, and is known for his paintings with motifs of birds and flowers, and the soft shapes unique to handwork. Many of them have a retro feel from the Showa era, and the more you use them, the more flavor they gain, and they are loved by many people as works of art that are close to everyday life. "Shino-de" refers to works that incorporate the style of Shino-yaki, a traditional technique of Mino ware, which has its roots in the Momoyama period. By applying a painting with makeup clay (Onita) containing iron, and then applying a feldspar glaze and firing it, a soft texture with a white base and a gray or reddish tint is created. This is a gem that feels the tradition with its heartwarming appearance unique to handmade craftsmanship. Of course, it can be used as a sake vessel in tea kaiseki dishes to be enjoyed at home, and it would also be wonderful to use it as a flower vase for a single flower.
