Zemai Zemai-ori (Zemai weaving) is a fabric woven in Akita Prefecture's Kameda area from the Meiji era until around the pre-war period. It is also known as a phantom fabric. Zemai, also known as the king of wild vegetables, has new shoots that grow after the snow melts in the Tohoku region. These shoots are protected by a cotton-like substance, which is said to be water-repellent and has a softness similar to wool. Zemai-ori was born in the harsh natural environment of the snowy mountain villages of Tohoku, Akita, using this zemai cotton. The beginning of Zemai-ori dates back to 1887, when Yujiro Sato, a cloth merchant from the former Honjo domain, created a mixed yarn from the cotton-like substance of locally grown zemai and cotton, and commercialized it as a woven product. Zemai-ori, which excels in heat retention and water resistance, was distributed in the Tohoku region under the name "Ei-neru" because its texture is similar to flannel. In addition, Zemai-ori is highly insect-resistant and is sometimes called Kameda-ori, after its place of origin. Zemai-ori is very durable, and even when worn as a kimono for many years, it does not easily deteriorate. Also, if the color fades, it can be worn inside out, making it a valuable item in daily life. This is an unused item with the stitching still attached, but it has been stored for a long time at home.
