This is a superb one-horn album by the veteran tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, also known as "Little Giant," recorded for Blue Note. It follows his earlier leader album on Argo and marks his first for Blue Note. The backing is provided by a stellar rhythm section consisting of Wynton Kelly (p), Curly Russell (b), and Max Roach (ds). As his nickname suggests, Griffin's playing is powerful and full of heart, with a wonderful touch on ballads. In addition to Griffin's passionate blowing, which is full of jazz energy, the listener can also enjoy Kelly's piano playing, which is still in development and before the completion of his characteristic style later known as "Kelly-ism." The jacket has some yellowing, but the aging is minimal and in good condition. The record has some cloudiness (see photos 6 and 7), but surprisingly, the noise is minimal and has almost no effect. There are some small pops in places, but overall, the record is in good condition. There is no "vangelder" stamp, but the thick sound typical of mono recordings is also attractive, and the bass of Russell and Griffin's blowing resonate beautifully.
