The back of the inkstone is engraved with "Odomari Ishi," which is another name for Ogatsu stone, or Gensho stone. It's called Odomari Ishi because the stone comes from Odomari Mountain in Ogatsu (the mountain was designated as "Odomari-yama" by Date Masamune, who prohibited unauthorized mining because the stone was good for inkstones, and used the inkstones as offerings to feudal lords and the shogunate, promoting inkstone production in the Sendai domain).
