Hanging scroll (chagake) by Zen master Soken Nishigaki. The calligraphy, with its flowing yet sharp brushstrokes, reads "Juzan Senko-sui." This phrase is a Zen term meaning "The mountains of longevity are always green and never age," and it also signifies good deeds and longevity, like two seas, infinite and immeasurable, bringing good fortune. As it is a hanging scroll with auspicious words, it is often displayed in January to celebrate the New Year, but it can be displayed regardless of the season. This is a handwritten work by the artist, with a signature and kao (stylized signature), and comes with a matching box. A paper box for storing the matching box is also included, so please use it for storage. Soken Nishigaki [1908-1985] Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1908. He entered the Shinjuan sub-temple of Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto and received tonsure from Master Nanzan. He was given the Buddhist name Soken and the dharma name Bunzan. Later, he served as the chief priest of Gokuraku-ji Temple, a Jodo sect temple in Arima Onsen, Hyogo Prefecture.
