It has a different front shape from the 0 series, based on the design of the 701 series introduced in the Tohoku area, and is active over a wide area, mainly on the Oito Line (between Matsumoto and Minami-Otari), and also on the Chuo Main Line, Shinonoi Line, and Shinetsu Main Line (between Kobuchizawa and Nagano). Some formations are equipped with a pantograph called a frost-removal pantograph on the Kuha E126 to cope with the harsh winter environment. The frost-removal pantograph has had its power collection function added since around 2014, and wiring has been installed on the roof.
