The Soma Nomaoi is said to have a history of over a thousand years, with a legend that it began when the warrior Taira no Masakado trained his soldiers on horseback. In the late 12th century, the second son of Chiba Tsunetane, a descendant of Masakado, became the ancestor of the Soma clan, and they ruled the region for 700 years. In 1323, the base was moved to Minamisoma City, and it is said that the Nomaoi events were held every year.
