The history of Mumeiyaki began in 1819 (Bunsei 2), when Jinpei Ito used Mumei, which is mined from the Sado gold mine, to manufacture raku ware. In 1857, Tomitaro Ito began Hon-yaki (true firing), and in the Meiji era, Jozan Miura and others developed the technique into durable pottery through high-temperature firing. "Mumeido," the iron-rich red clay found around the Sado gold mine, is characterized by its metallic texture and deep reddish-brown color when fired. It was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of the country in 2003, and in 2024, it was also certified as a Traditional Craft Product designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Mr. Bunpei Shimizu creates works that incorporate a modern sensibility while inheriting this traditional technique. It is a masterpiece that combines the profound beauty of form that evokes the nature and history of Sado, and practicality that increases in flavor the more it is used.
