Lao women weave these by hand on looms, using methods passed down through generations. Locally, it is said to be draped over the shoulders during formal occasions such as weddings and various celebrations. The weaving is very fine and beautiful, so it can be used as fabric for tapestries, table runners, etc. You can also repurpose it into cushion covers, fashion accessories, and other items. The threads are spun from cotton or cocoons, dyed with plant dyes, and woven by hand. I myself have experienced dyeing and spinning threads in the local area, and it was a very time-consuming process with many steps. Also, unlike in Japan, they are sometimes made on the earthen floors or unpaved ground of the eaves, and mud may splash on them from squalls or rain.
