U.S. Military Surplus During the 1940s, in the era of World War II, soldiers going off to war had a custom of giving accessories to the families and lovers they left behind. These were called sweetheart jewelry, and many featured designs of the soldiers' respective military branches, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches. This is a torpedo-shaped pendant made at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Forest Park, Illinois, which operated from 1942 to 1945. It was a major base for torpedo manufacturing during WWII. It's a vertical necklace with a hole in the head of the torpedo for the chain to pass through. The rear is designed to resemble a screw, but it does not rotate or move. This is a blank item without any engravings, but it has been passed down to someone. Some items have the base name or personal names engraved on them. This is a deadstock item of sweetheart jewelry with no engraved name, from someone assigned to this base. I believe it is made of machined aluminum. It is thought that soldiers wore this along with their dog tags. A long and short chain of the same construction as those for dog tags is also included. It was found in the same warehouse as the charm, but there is no evidence as it is the same as the current ones, but it is natural to consider it from the same era. The clasp has a "U.S.A." engraving. Stainless steel ball chains were adopted for dog tags from 1944, but the contractors varied, with or without engravings.
