It was Mizoguchi's first contemporary drama since "Sansho the Bailiff" in 1954, and became his final film as he passed away after its release. Aiko Mimasu, known for her "mother roles," played an older prostitute, and the energetic and frenetic performances of Machiko Kyō, Ayako Wakao, and Michiyo Kogure, among others, were also highly praised.
