Buaku is a demon mask that appears in Kyogen (traditional Japanese comic theater). Its drooping eyelids, large aquiline nose, and bared teeth biting its lower lip give it a comical rather than terrifying appearance. This Buaku mask is particularly well-painted and has an expressive finish. My father has made many masks, including this one, for use in local festivals.
