This is a retro "competitive karuta card-style Hyakunin Isshu quick memorization tool" that was found in a closet during the disposal of my mother's family home (near Kiyomizu-dera Temple). It's labeled as a quick-capture practice tool, devised to help memorize Hyakunin Isshu. I believe it's a tool for participating in karuta tournaments. Devised by Akio Sho, a Shinonome-kai player. So this is how everyone practiced back then. I imagine it was for practicing the common practice of quickly grabbing the card after hearing the first few syllables! It might be a basic tool for those who play competitive karuta, but it feels like a different era. The back of the box has a Meiji era date, so it might be from the Meiji period. It shows a lot of use. A testament to practice. I'm not sure how it would be used, whether as a collector's item, a historical artifact, or for display, but I think it's a wonderful item. Consider it for display in soba restaurants, old folk house cafes, izakayas, etc. Since it's extremely old, please refrain from purchasing if you are sensitive or do not understand old items.
