The following is from the internet: First published in 1872 (Meiji 5, February). Subsequent volumes were published over several years, and the series was provisionally completed with the publication of the seventeenth volume on November 25, 1876 (Meiji 9). Later, in 1880 (Meiji 13), a preface titled "Combined Edition of An Encouragement of Learning" was added, and the work was compiled into a single volume. The Japanese people immediately after the Meiji Restoration knew only the feudal society and Confucian thought that had continued unchanged for several hundred years. This book addressed the nation, describing Japan's transition from a medieval feudal society to a modern democratic state. It explained Western modern political thought, the ideals that constitute democracy, and the concept of a civil state using easy-to-understand metaphors. It denied Confucian thought and aimed to reform the consciousness of the Japanese people, transforming them from ignorant masses under feudal rule into self-aware citizens who should become the sovereign of a democratic state. The book also devoted several chapters to addressing intellectuals of the time, arguing that the maintenance of Japan's independence and the development of the Meiji state rested on the shoulders of intellectuals, urging them to become aware, and expressing Fukuzawa's own determination to lead the way. The latter chapters conclude with his personal views on attitudes toward life. Found during a decluttering session.
