Acquired in Amman, Jordan, about 30 years ago, and kept unused on a textile shelf ever since. This is a small, hand-woven mat made with plump, thick wool warp and wool dyed in pale pink and pale blue weft, likely using a backstrap loom, a method employed by Jordanian nomads, to tension the warp. Most of the mat's ground is the color of undyed wool. The long fringe has small black specks of impurities from the spinning process, which is a characteristic of handmade weaving. Please understand this. Also, some of the undyed, skin-toned yarn has thin gray and dark brown threads mixed in, and about 5 cm from one edge, thin brown warp threads are woven in, providing a certain accent. The front and back are also nearly identical. I washed it once, but there was no color bleeding. Traditional mats made by nomads often use natural dyes, and this item has a subdued color, but because there was no color bleeding, it is likely chemically dyed. The pattern is applied to both the top and bottom of the skin-toned mat. On one end, three mountain-like triangles are placed above a thin line of pale green, and on the other end, thick horizontal bands of pale pink and pale blue are placed, within which a large dome or forest? in pale blue, and a small hill? in pale pink are depicted. Traditionally, nomads made rugs and other items from goat hair, but in recent years, it is said that they use imported wool yarn from Syria and Turkey to weave mats and other items. The non-fading dyes are also probably imported. Jordanian sand art has recently become a topic of conversation in Japan, but this is a small mat that seems durable and warm, finished with modern materials using traditional Jordanian mat weaving techniques.
