This is a very rare violin with a skull carved into the neck. Details: Unknown maker. Information is limited to the fact that it was purchased at a European antique market. The label reads: CATACOMBE dei CAPPUCCINI fecit Palermo An.1920 AMS logo and a cross. Branding: MEMENTO MORI (?) According to the label, it seems to indicate the name of a catacomb (?) in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, and that it was made in Palermo, Italy in 1920. I couldn't find any information about the logo. Judging from the varnish and the wood's aging, it appears to be about 100 years old. I don't think it's a newly antique-finished instrument. While carvings of lions and human faces are sometimes seen, I couldn't find any information or even images of a skull head carving, even after searching. It might be rare worldwide. The sound is rich in overtones and resonates well. Especially the high positions on the higher strings ring out beautifully. It seems like it will become a very resonant instrument with more playing. The body has many scratches and stains. The back is made of a single piece of wood, suggesting it's not a mass-produced instrument. There is a line visible on the lower part of the back. It might be a crack, but there is no step when pressed. Branding on the bridge. It is playable in its current condition, but maintenance is recommended. I don't think there are any critical issues. (This is my personal opinion.) I think it's rare to have the opportunity to acquire an instrument like this, so please consider purchasing it soon if you are interested.
