Traditional Japanese wooden dolls are called Kokeshi. They originated in the late Edo period as souvenirs for children in hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region. They are characterized by a spherical head and a cylindrical body, and are decorated with traditional patterns. Traditional Kokeshi are classified into about 12 types depending on their place of origin, each with different characteristics.
