It's very functional and useful, and I think having one on your desk will help keep things organized and make your desk look tidy. You can feed cords from the back and bring them out to the top shelf (which has a sturdy cushion material), allowing you to charge devices. I only had it on my desk and didn't move it around, so I don't think there are any scratches (if there are any, they would be from the initial manufacturing).
