According to the label, it's made of polyester, but it looks like satin with a nice sheen, and I bought it because of the cute embroidery. Also, the length is long enough to cover your hips, which is great for body coverage. It's thin (no lining), so I wore a tank top underneath and black pants for a wedding in the middle of summer. I think it would also look good with a turtleneck in the winter. Of course, it would also go well with a long skirt. It might be more suitable for going out than for everyday wear.
