Meissen's representative work, Blue Onion, began in 1739 when Meissen painter J.D. Kretzschmar invented a blue coloring material for underglaze painting and announced a design based on a Chinese pomegranate pattern. At the time, its popularity led to many imitations, and as proof of authenticity, the Meissen kiln mark "Blue Swords" was placed at the base of the tree from around 1893. This Color Onion adds gold and red to the Blue Onion, and is a rare item with a distinctive image reminiscent of Imari ware, which only master painters were allowed to produce.
