This is a black formal kimono featuring designs created using Sagara embroidery, one of the three major embroidery techniques in China. Sagara embroidery, also known as "tama-nui" (ball stitch), is a technique where the thread is pulled from the back of the fabric, knotted, and then repeated to create the pattern. It takes a great deal of effort and time to produce, but unlike other embroidery techniques where the thread floats on the surface, the thread is less likely to snag, making it more durable than any other embroidery. The elegant and vibrant colors, and the Heian period patterns are expressed through Sagara embroidery, which is entirely hand-stitched, with each stitch carefully sewn. You can fully enjoy the intricate finish unique to Sagara embroidery. The lining (hakke) also features patterns created with Sagara embroidery.
